The Holmes Center stands as a testament to Appalachian State University’s commitment to excellence in academics, athletics, and community engagement. What began as a vision in 1986 to enhance campus facilities evolved into a transformative project spanning nearly 15 years. With strong legislative support and careful planning, the center was designed to serve both university and regional needs, offering a dynamic space for education, events, and cultural programming. Mission

The George M. Holmes Convocation Center’s Mission is to provide facilities for the Department to Recreation Management and Physical Education and to support the academic processes of Appalachian State University. Serving as a multipurpose venue for the northwestern region of North Carolina, the center will support university-sponsored events, such as commencement and college fairs. Cultural events, concerts, trade shows, athletic events, and other public assembly activities will also be a part of the center’s programming.
